WHY BULLYING?

The word "bullying" is primarily used to describe childhood victimization.  However, this taught behavior continues throughout life under the guise of different names. Regardless of age, race, sex or social standing, the common threat that underlies this experience is a feeling of powerlessness.

No one is immune to the effects.

Why Bullying? A concept that spans generations and is exhibited in all forms of social interaction. This behavior is present in schools, at work, in media, politics and entertainment. Therefore, the idea that bullying only involves children downplays the enormity of this global behavior.

Using a foundation of holistic health, we believe the focus must be on the individual, community, and the world as a whole. Working together to foster self-acceptance, love and our connection to each other is the way to make lasting change.

Together we say, THIS ENDS TODAY!

Fact 1: Adults Bully, Children Follow Suit

Bullying isn't just a children's issue. Part of the problem is that children are following behavior modeled by adults. Even comments said off hand, or in anger, to denegrate another adult or another parent's child can and does inspire children to use bullying as a way to feel better about themselves. Not to mention the many many children who are victims of abuse from a parent or guardian. Adults, too, experience bullying in their lives and workplaces.

"Over one-third of our country's workforce has experienced bullying, according to the Workplace Bullying Institute, and 72 percent of the cases are instigated by a superior, boss, or supervisor." (from the Huffington Post).

Fast 2: Most people will deal with a bully

  • About 42 percent of kids have been bullied while online with one in four being verbally attacked more than once.
  • About 35 percent of kids have been threatened online.
  • About 58 percent of kids and teens have reported that something mean has been said about them or to them online.
  • Other bullying statistics show that about 77 percent of students have admitted to being the victim of one type of bullying or another.
  • The American Justice Department bullying statistics show that one out of ever 4 kids will be bullied sometime throughout their adolescence.
  • 46 percent of males followed by 26 percent of females have admitted to being victims in physical fights as reported in one report of bullying statistics by the Bureau of Justice School.

Fact 3: Bullying Takes Lives

  • Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to the CDC. For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, and almost 7 percent have attempted it.
  • Bully victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims, according to studies by Yale University
  • A study in Britain found that at least half of suicides among young people are related to bullying
  • 10 to 14 year old girls may be at even higher risk for suicide, according to the study above
  • According to statistics reported by ABC News, nearly 30 percent of students are either bullies or victims of bullying, and 160,000 kids stay home from school every day because of fear of bullying

Fact 4: Current Programs Don't Address the Root Causes of Bullying

"A study published last month in the Journal of Criminology suggested that anti-bullying programs could be having the opposite than intended effects. In an analysis of 7,000 students from 50 states, researchers from the University of Texas at Arlington found that students at schools with anti-bullying initiatives may be more likely to become a victim of bullying." - (CBS)

Bullying Exposed seeks to uncover the learned behavior that bully and victim are playing into, focuses on peer intervention, and attempts to help both parties to understand that they are more connected that they realize. Current programs promote talking to a teacher, which isn't a bad idea when the bullying is extreme, but it can't be the only solution proposed to this complex problem.
